I couldn’t have a candle in my room until I was in high school. I was always debating with my parents about why I couldn’t have a flammable item in my room that could be forgotten about, knocked over, and burn the whole house down. Finally, when we moved back to Milwaukee I was able to have a candle in my room.

One of my favorite things I started doing would be lighting the sweet smelling candle, get comfy, and read a book. It would always calm me down and I would stare at the candle and lose myself in my thoughts.

For a candle to reach it’s full potential, it has to stay lit for a while. It’s only after the wax begins to melt that the aroma can fill the room. Sometimes the scent would just permeate my entire room and I would be so overwhelmed with the scent.

Obviously candles come in tons of different scents, the one I had in my room was cranberry (leftover from christmas). I love any fruity smelling candle and my dad likes the warm sugar cookie candle. Of course no one likes the candle that smells like cheap bathroom spray or one that doesn’t have a smell at all.

This got me wondering about what scent I would be if I was a candle. Would God like my aroma or would he squish up his nose due to the smelliness? Is my attitude pleasing to Him or his he repulsed by my awful attitude?

I guess our lives can be described as an aroma, or a candle. If you had to describe how your life smells to God, how would you describe it? Do you smell like roses or compost?

I found some scripture that related to us christians spreading the fragrance of God…

“But thanks be to God, who always leads us as captives in Christ;s triumphal procession and uses us to spread the aroma of the knowledge of Him everywhere. For we are to God the pleasing aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing.” 2 Corinthians 2:14-15

I hope to believe I am spreading a fragrance that is pleasing to God and I have to ask him to improve the “smell” of my life.
